Jeep is working on the development of off-road autonomous driving.

The automotive industry is currently undergoing significant technological advancements, and autonomous driving is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges that manufacturers can tackle after electrification. Jeep has decided to take the concept even further and integrate autonomous driving into off-road capabilities, which is highly innovative and forward-thinking on the part of the American automaker.
Jeep conducted its first phase of off-road autonomous driving testing with the Grand Cherokee 4xe in the Moab Desert, Utah. What makes this technology particularly interesting is that it is not only reactive and proactive, as is the case with traditional autonomous systems. The American manufacturer has also added artificial intelligence that analyzes the situation to make decisions on its own.
An advanced technology
This is a necessity when it comes to off-road autonomous driving since the terrains that vehicles can encounter are variable and may include numerous random obstacles. It is not like on the road where everything is repetitive. Furthermore, the majority of autonomous systems operate based on predefined routes and different sensors that allow them to react to traffic and road conditions. Thus, one can imagine that Jeep’s off-road autonomous driving technology functions somewhat similarly, with AI reacting in a personalized manner.
Finally, we can only speculate on how artificial intelligence works in this case since the American manufacturer has not shared any specific details on the matter. It is a new technology, and now that Jeep has demonstrated it, we can certainly expect other manufacturers offering vehicles with enhanced off-road capabilities to develop something similar in due course. However, the American manufacturer remains a pioneer in this segment.
Jeep’s goal is to enable moree people to enjoy the pleasures of off-road driving with this new technology, as mentioned by Christian Meunier, the president of the Jeep brand, in the brand’s official press release. It is clear that purists may not share the same opinion, but the project remains nonetheless interesting.
Jeep has announced that an explanatory video will be released later this summer, which is eagerly anticipated.
